On the road with Sinead

Sinead has been on the road with us since December 2014, we asked a few probing questions about life on the road with Dragoman...

Why did you become Dragoman crew?

I had been travelling for a while and couldn't get used to being back home and someone told me this would be the job for me. My sister did a Dragoman trip 11 years ago and even though I was too young to become crew at that time, I spent years planning my fantasy future trips until I was old enough to apply. The week of my 25th birthday, I was knocking on Dragoman’s door. Trucks! Travel! Camping! Adventure! Basically everything I love!

What’s your favourite destination and why?

That’s a tough question! I love Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Peru, Ethiopia, and pretty much everywhere else has a special place in my heart.

What’s the best thing about working as Dragoman crew?

There are the obvious attractions to the job like driving a truck and traveling, but the independence and immersing myself in different cultures, religions, food, and wonderful local people are what keep me addicted to this life.

What’s the oddest thing you’ve ever eaten or drunk?

I ate a deep-fried tarantula in Cambodia and drank fermented horse milk in Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia.

Funniest/best Dragoman moment?

That’s a toughy! Best moments would include the Machu Picchu trek (and the place itself), game park safaris out in Africa, walled old towns in China, Victoria Falls, hiking around Torres Del Paine, sand dune buggying in Peru, experiencing the pilgrims’ walk to Lalibela in Ethiopia, Mongolian throat singing, Muharram in Iran, Uzbekistan’s ancient architecture, and I can’t leave out Kyrgyz Goat Polo!

What’s the one must-have item in your backpack?

The latest one is my solar panel charger.

Best piece of advice you can pass on to future passengers?

My mom’s currently packing for a Dragoman trip and I have to keep reminding her to pack light. I’ve advised her to stay away from the rolling suitcase and stick to good quality backpacks that come in all sorts of sizes. Might consider dark coloured clothing, as overlanding can get grubby… I’m still trying to get the mutton fat out of my down jacket after an incident with an exploding pressure cooker in Mongolia!

Come with an open mind, a positive attitude, and leave your expectations at home!

What's the one luxury item you take with you?

My Go Pro for action videos and a TINY bottle of nail polish to disguise the dirt under my nails! There are days on the road when that is the only thing that makes me feel like a lady.

Has this got you tempted to join us as crew? Apply here!
