Extend your trip from Ushuaia with an Imaginative Traveller polar expedition

Many of our South America overland trips end in Ushuaia on the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, the southernmost point of the continent and the so-called “End of the World” – but it doesn’t have to be the end of your trip. Our sister company Imaginative Traveller has just added a range of new polar expeditions in Antarctica, departing from Ushuaia in 2019 and beyond.

Although Antarctica is remote, it is rich with human history. Travellers can visit the grave of famous British explorer Ernest Shackleton at a small whalers’ cemetery in Grytvikin, South Georgia. Shackleton sadly died of a heart attack on his fourth expedition to the Antarctic. His gravestone is inscribed with a quote from one of his favourite poets, Robert Browning: “I hold…that a man should strive to the uttermost for his life’s set prize”.

Also on offer is the opportunity to cross the legendary Drake Passage, reputedly the roughest sea-passage in the world, but perfectly safe on ice-strengthened modern ships!

The Antarctic is also one of the best places to see the Aurora Australis, the Northern Lights’ southern cousin. These brilliant dancing lights are the result of collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun as they enter the atmosphere, different gases creating different colours, and are one of the Earth’s most breathtaking natural occurrences.

And there’s plenty for the wildlife-lover to see as well. Keep an eye out for minke, humpback and orca whales; gentoo, Adelie and chinstrap penguins; and petrels, cormorants, and black-browed albatross.

Take a look at just some of the trips on offer below, or visit the Imaginative Traveller website to find out more. If you’d like to join one of these trips, speak to your Dragoman Travel Advisor and they can book this Imaginative Traveller extension for you.
